Had Not The Blessed Son Of God

Had not the blessed Son of God,
Who condescended thus:
To come on earth and shed his blood,
Who could have saved us!

No sacrifice could e’er by made,
That could atone for sin;
None but the blood the Saviour shed,
Could make our conscience clean.

We never could have been restor’d,
Into a state of bliss:
Had it not been that Christ our Lord,
Became our righteousness.

In this sad state we must have lain,
To all eternity,
Had we not been reclaim’d again,
By Christ who set us free.
