Lord Jesus Thou The Church’s Head – Hymn Lyric

Lord Jesus,
Thou the Church’s Head,
Thou art her one Foundation;
In Thee she trusts,
before Thee bows,
And waits for Thy salvation.

Built on this Rock secure,
Thy Church shall endure
E’en though the world decay
And all things pass away.

Oh, hear, oh, hear us, Jesus!

O Lord,
let this Thy little flock,
Thy name alone confessing,
Continue in Thy loving care,
True unity possessing.

Thy Sacraments, O Lord,
And Thy saving Word
To us e’er pure retain.
Grant that they may remain
Our only strength and comfort.

Help us to serve Thee evermore
With hearts both pure and lowly;
And may Thy Word,
that divine,
Shine on in splendor holy.

That we show,
In faith ever grow;
The power of destroy
And all that doth annoy.

Oh, make us faithful Christians!

And for Thy Gospel let us dare
To sacrifice all treasure;
Teach us to bear
Thy blessed cross,
To find in Thee all pleasure.

Oh, grant us steadfastness
In joy and distress,
That we Thee ne’er forsake.
Let us by grace partake
Of endless joy and glory.

Meaning of Lord Jesus Thou The Church’s Head

Lord Jesus, Thou The Church’s Head: The Solid Foundation

In this hymn, we praise and acknowledge Jesus as the Head of the Church, the solid foundation upon which it stands. We recognize that our trust and salvation lie in Him alone. Just as a building needs a strong foundation to withstand the test of time, the Church relies on Jesus, the Rock secure, for its endurance.

As members of Christ’s Church, we form a united flock, with Jesus as our shepherd. We confess His name and strive to continue in His loving care. It is through the sacraments and His saving Word that we receive His grace and mercy. These gifts must be retained in their purity, as they are our source of strength and comfort.

Our response to this great love and grace should be a life of service to our Lord. We are called to serve Him with pure and humble hearts, always seeking to grow in faith. His Word, which shines as a divine light, should guide our every step. By this light, we are led to repentance, to the destruction of the power of sin, and to the removal of all that troubles and torments us.

Jesus, as our Head, calls us to live as faithful Christians. It is through Him that we find the strength to sacrifice worldly treasures for the sake of the Gospel. We are encouraged to bear our cross, knowing that in Christ, we will find true pleasure and fulfillment. Through His steadfastness, we can face both joy and distress without ever forsaking Him.

As we partake in His endless joy and glory, we yearn to be a Church that bears witness to His Gospel. And so, we dare to be courageous in proclaiming His truth to the world. We are willing to endure any sacrifice or hardship for the sake of spreading His message of salvation. In Him, we find the strength to live a life worthy of His calling.

This hymn reminds us that Jesus is not just the Head of the Church, but also our faithful shepherd, and leading us through life’s challenges. As His flock, we find unity and comfort in His care. The Church is not merely an institution but a living body, with Christ as its foundation and source of strength.

Let us, as members of the Church, strive to live ever more faithfully. May our hearts remain pure and humble, always seeking to serve Jesus with joy and devotion. May His Word continue to shine brightly in our lives, guiding us to repentance, growth in faith, and victory over sin. Let us boldly proclaim His Gospel, sacrificing worldly treasures for the sake of His truth.

Lord Jesus, Thou The Church’s Head: may this song be a constant reminder of our need for You and our commitment to walk in Your ways. May we, as Your Church, strong and united, built upon the foundation of Your love and grace. Amen.
