Storm Upon The Waters – Hymn Lyric
Storm upon the waters, terrors on the deep,
While the winds and waves wildly beat,
Thru the driving tempest, Jesus lies asleep,
Till disciples kneel at His feet.
Refrain:
“Master, oh hear us, stormy tempests blow,
Save, or we perish, in the waves below,
Calm o’er the waters that obey His will,
Comes the sweet voice of Jesus “Peace, be still.”
Tho’ the deepest sorrow, sin or cruel care,
Come to fill our hearts with their woe,
Call upon the Saviour, never feel despair,
At His word all trouble must go.
Refrain:
“Master, oh hear us, stormy tempests blow,
Save, or we perish, in the waves below,
Calm o’er the waters that obey His will,
Comes the sweet voice of Jesus “Peace, be still.”
Trust Him for salvation, for His Word is sure,
Where He stays all tumult must cease,
Ever thru the ages shall His will endure,
Giving calm and safety and peace.
Refrain:
“Master, oh hear us, stormy tempests blow,
Save, or we perish, in the waves below,
Calm o’er the waters that obey His will,
Comes the sweet voice of Jesus “Peace, be still.”
Meaning of Storm Upon The Waters
In times of trouble and despair, it is easy to let fear and worry consume us. We may feel like we are caught in a storm, with terrors surrounding us on all sides. But in the midst of this chaos, we can find solace and hope in the story of Jesus calming the storm.
Imagine a storm raging upon the waters, with waves crashing and winds howling. The disciples, terrified for their lives, cry out to Jesus for help. And where is Jesus in this moment of fear and uncertainty? He is peacefully asleep in the boat.
It may seem strange that Jesus is able to find rest in the midst of such turmoil, but it is a reminder to us that even in our darkest moments, there is always a glimmer of hope. Just as Jesus was able to find peace amidst the storm, so too can we find peace in our own lives, no matter the circumstances.
The disciples, desperate for salvation, kneel before Jesus and plead for Him to save them. They cry out, “Master, oh hear us, stormy tempests blow, Save, or we perish, in the waves below.” Their cries are filled with fear and desperation, but in their plea, we can find comfort. We can call upon Jesus in our moments of deepest sorrow, sin, or cruel care, and know that He will hear our cries and come to our aid.
What happens next in the story is truly remarkable. Upon hearing the disciples’ cries, Jesus rises from His slumber and commands the storm to be still. With just a few words, “Peace, be still,” Jesus brings calmness to the raging waters. The mighty waves retreat, the winds subside, and tranquility is restored.
In our own lives, we often face storms that threaten to overwhelm us. These storms may take the form of physical or emotional pain, difficulties at school or at home, or the challenges of growing up. But just as Jesus was able to bring peace to the storm, so too can we find solace and comfort in Him.
When we feel overwhelmed by our troubles, we can trust in Jesus for salvation. His Word is sure, and where He stays, all tumult must cease. He has power over the storm, and through His love and grace, He can bring calmness and safety into our lives.
It is important for us to remember that Jesus is not only present in the story of the calming of the storm, but He is also with us in our everyday lives. He promises to be with us always, guiding and protecting us through any challenges we may face. We can trust in His unfailing love and find peace in His presence.
So, when the storms of life threaten to engulf us, let us remember these words from the hymn: “Master, oh hear us, stormy tempests blow, Save, or we perish, in the waves below, Calm o’er the waters that obey His will, Comes the sweet voice of Jesus ‘Peace, be still.'”
Let us call upon the Savior and never feel despair, for at His word, all trouble must go. Let us trust in Him for salvation, knowing that His Word is sure. His will endures through the ages, offering us calmness, safety, and peace.
May we find comfort in the story of Jesus calming the storm, realizing that He has the power to bring peace to any situation. And may we always remember that no matter how turbulent the waters may become, we can have faith that Jesus is there with us, guiding us through the storms of life.
