When Christ the Son of God was slain,
Upon that awful day,
The temple’s veil was rent in twain,
The sunlight fled away.

The debt He paid for you and me
The cross He meekly bore;
But now from pain and sorrow free,
He reigns forevermore.

With thorns upon His bleeding brow,
He goes to Calvary,
To death His humble soul did bow
